1940s Annette Nancarrow Ring: Pre-Columbian Carved Stone, Adjustable Brass Band
$500.00
Title: 1940s Annette Nancarrow, Relic Ring, Repurposed Pre-Columbian Sculpture, Adjustable size
Materials: Ancient Stone Relic, Brass
Brand / Maker: Annette Nancarrow, Mexico
Era: 1940s
This relic ring is one extraordinary example of a very unique body of work from artist/maker/actress/influencer Annette Nancarrow. Set with a pre-Columbian carved stone face in a brass band setting. The ring is adjustable - open size.
In 1936, a talented, beautiful American artist ran away to Mexico City to escape a boring marriage, marry an exciting lover, and join the “big three” Mexican muralists—Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Siqueiros—in their exploration of socially conscious art. Annette Nancarrow lived in Mexico for fifty years, took many lovers, became friends with Frida Kahlo, married two more times, painted, designed jewelry, participated in creating a famous mural, “liberated” Pre-Columbian art from the government, and led an exciting social life with the glitterati of Mexico’s golden era.
December of 1947, Annette would have her first one-woman show at the prestigious Galeria de Arte Mexicano owned by Inés Amor. Annette would exhibit about 20 large oils on canvas and 15 on paper. The show was a huge success; she had good publicity, sold many paintings, and was featured in the newspaper Novedades as the Woman of the Week. One of the paintings sold served as inspiration for a painting now in the Fine Arts Museum collection in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
In 1949 after winning a mural-painting contest at the Hotel Borda in Taxco. Annette relocated to Acapulco and became fascinated with pre-Columbian history and archeology. Ultimately she began to design and sell unique and original jewelry from a small shop in the lobby of Hotel Mirador while she continued to paint.
