Simply Divine! Handbag by Tano of Madrid, circa 1960s.
This bag has classic 60s lines with a square shape and rounded corners. It is made of snakeskin, engineered with different tones sewn into a chevron pattern. The colors of the skins, the zig-zag effect and the contrasting Lucite chain modernize the whole look. The gussets are russet-colored and the bottom has four small "feet" for protection. The bag is carried by two leather arched handles and a gold-tone frame. The drop is 5 1/2". The lining is black and there is an open slip pocket and a zippered pocket. "Tano of Madrid Made in Spain" is imprinted in gold letters inside. No significant issues to mention.
Tano was started in the 1930s by a man named Sebastian Giner who was an immigrant from Spain. Originally he had the women in his hometown weaving basket handbags which he would sell to shops in NYC. Then he expanded into leather and other materials, everything made in Spain. Eventually, they also manufactured in Italy and in Taiwan. In the 60s his 2 sons, Peter and Sebastian, took over and Tano became one of the leading handbags companies in the US.
