Description: 1970’s Hilda Ltd. vintage Icelandic wool sweater/jacket with that retro handknit look, and snaps down the front, and slash pockets! Bulky and Cozy the sweater is also light and lofty due to the specialized wool type. In great condition timeless retro look even today! This jacket/coat is a men’s small or could be women’s Med. The Hilda company was established in the late 60’s by husband (American) & wife (Iceland) team Mr&Mrs. Holton. Who harnessed the unique native sheep’s wool into a 7-million-dollar export cottage knit industry made in Iceland. This particular sheep breed is unique to the country and thought to be decedents of original Viking herds in the 10th century. Hilda brand sweaters were more popular outside of Iceland, primarily exported with 80% sales in USA & Canada. On a retail level, only about 50 stores in the United States could carry the sweaters. Distributed exclusively by Carol Reed Ski Shoppes, LL Bean and Eddie Bauer.Each outlet is granted exclusivity in its area; New Yorkers, for example, must trek to Outdoor Traders in Greenwich, Conn., to buy Hilda's, which were sold at retail for about $80 to $100.
