Rare vintage 1950s Fomerz Original Carpet bag - Overnight Duffle!
Fomerz was a high quality mid-century manufacturer in Florence Italy, specializing in reproduction antiques in the 50s-60s. Features include wool & mohair pile Belgium carpet, 2 twisted wicker handles, wooden top bars for structure, leather piped trim, brass clasp and leather flap closure. The bag is lined with caramel colored burlap, and has an inside pocket. Perfect as Decor, overnight travels, and as a handbag...think of this as the great grandmother to the "Burkin Bag"!
The carpet bag was invented as a type of inexpensive personal baggage light enough for a passenger to carry, like a duffel bag, as opposed to a large rigid wooden or metal trunk, which required the assistance of porters. The bag is in very good, vintage condition, with excellent patina. There is light loss of carpet fibers that are consistent with normal use and age over time - this adds to the vintage turn of the century look!
Traveling Etiquette - recommended women to take a fashionable carpet bag if staying overnight somewhere. The traveling satchel was to contain grooming items, a mirror, reading material, crackers, or sandwiches, if the traveler would be long enough upon the road to need a luncheon.
